TRENTON, N.J. - Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes and the Board of Chosen Freeholders today announce a new discount prescription drug program for Mercer County residents. The free program offers discount savings for residents who are paying full price at the pharmacy for prescription drugs, and is open to all Mercer County residents, regardless of their age or income.

“In these difficult economic times, especially with the cost of living continuing to increase, this discount program is a welcome benefit for our residents,” Hughes said. “This program is a free and easy way to help our residents keep more of their money in their pockets by helping to reduce the financial burden of their prescription medications. We are pleased to partner with ProAct to provide this innovative program and encourage our residents to participate.”

Prescription Discount Cards are being mailed to all households in Mercer County.

There are no enrollment forms to fill out, no membership fees, and no age or income requirements. There is no cost to Mercer County or participating residents. The cards are completely anonymous and one card can be used by an entire family. Participants just simply show the card to their pharmacist when they are filling a prescription and they can automatically receive savings. If a card is lost, a new one can be obtained by visiting

The discount program is designed to help reduce prescription costs for residents who do not have a prescription drug plan and for residents who take prescription medicine that is not covered by their current insurance. The cards cannot be combined with a resident’s existing health insurance coverage, be used to reduce co-pays or with other discount programs.

The discount program covers all prescription medications, brand or generic. The program even covers prescription pet medications that can be filled at any regular retail pharmacy. On average, participants can expect to save 10 to 20 percent on brand drugs and 20 to 70 percent on generic drugs. The prescription discount card can be used at any participating pharmacy in Mercer County and at more than 55,000 pharmacies nationwide.

ProAct is a subsidiary of Kinney Drugs, a healthcare company headquartered in Gouverneur, N.Y. The ProAct discounts are made possible through negotiated rates with participating locations.
